Disposable plastic cutlery, straws and stirring sticks are small but very common waste. They mostly occur at takeaway meals, events, cafes. Although in Hungary from July 1, 2021, disposable plastic cutlery (fork, knife, spoon, chopsticks), straws and drink mixing sticks have become prohibited products, 301/2021. On the basis of Government Decree VI.1.), however, we still encounter such devices frequently. The placing on the market of previously manufactured products is not prohibited. The ban covers plastic and its so-called “bioplastic” variants (e.g. PLA) for products.

They are made of polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) or other hard thermoplastic. These are inexpensive, but not, or only very limited recyclable.

They cannot be thrown into the selective collector, as they are not recyclable due to their small size and contamination. After use, they must be put in the municipal waste.

On average, we use them for a couple of minutes, but they can remain in the environment for up to 300-500 years. It is often carried out in nature, on water banks, and is swallowed or entangled by wildlife.

  • Bring your own set (e.g. metal, bamboo, wood)
  • Choose a degradable or reusable alternative
  • Support restaurants that do not have disposable cutlery
  • Teach your children why they should avoid them.
