Most often they are made of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS), often in combination with a multilayer non-recyclable material.

Most foils and trays contaminated with food cannot be thrown into the selective. A clean, non-greasy film or a tray marked PP/PS can go to the trash can with a yellow lid, but the rest will have to be put in the communal waste. Always check the label on the packaging.

It is produced extremely quickly and is typically used once. Due to food residue, it is often not recyclable, so it is burned or dumped. It has a degradation period of hundreds of years and can also be returned to the food chain as a microplastic.
