Egg holder

Papír

The egg tray is the cardboard or plastic stuff that we buy with the eggs, and then in a few days it's already floating around in the kitchen. Paper or plastic — but not always what it looks like.

Miből készül?

Most often it is made of recycled paper (paper fiber), but it also exists in PET or PS plastic versions, and sometimes even expanded polystyrene (which is the plastic hell panties).

Hova dobjuk?

Made of paper: you can go to the blue trash, but only if it is clean, not moldy or food residue. Plastic (PET/PS): you can go to the yellow trash after rinsing (if there is a mark on it). Foamed, soiled or cracked: unfortunately trash. Compostable if it is made of paper.

Miért problémás?

Plenty of it is made, disposable, and not all versions are recyclable. The plastic and foamed tray is very difficult to decompose, it can also release microplastics into the environment.

  • Buy measuredwith its own egg container on the market or from a producer
  • Reuse: for market purchase, for planting, for sorting
  • Avoid the plastic versionif there is a choice
  • CompostIt's made of paper when you're no longer using it.
  • Give it a second life: creative DIY (eg. egg-holder advent calendar?)

Alternatívák

  • Own reusable egg tray(e.g. metal, textile or recycled box)
  • Package-free shopping with canvas stapler: farmer's market, without box
  • Recycled cardboard boxinstead of a compostable version

Tippek!

If your egg tray is made of paper, but it is greasy or moldy — do not put it in the paper picker, rather compost it or throw it in the trash!
