Cups are typically made of PP (polypropylene) plastic, while lids are often made of aluminum or multiple layers of plastic film — the latter of which are difficult to recycle.

The flushed PP cups can go into the selective bin with the yellow lid. Cover film should be collected separately, if possible neatly. Mixed media, contaminated films and unwashed glass go to municipal waste.

Many of them are produced very quickly — they are used on a daily basis, yet due to their small size they are easily lost in the collection system and are often contaminated. Lids with mixed material are difficult to sort, glasses are not always properly cleaned in the selective.
