Mobile Phone

Elektronikai

The mobile phone is one of the dearest (and most harmful) companions of humanity: essential, but short-lived. Tons of old phones lying in the drawer are waiting to be given a new life — or just to stay there forever.

Miből készül?

A smartphone contains more than 60 types of materials, including gold, silver, cobalt, lithium, nickel and rare earth metals. Mining of these often takes place in inhumane conditions, while most of the devices become obsolete in a couple of years.

Hova dobjuk?

Never in the trash! The mobile phone is electronic waste, so it must be dropped off at separate collection points. Drop-off options in Hungary: MediaMarkt, Euronics, BestByte —” they take back any old mobile. Telekom, Vodafone, Yettel stores also hold recycling promotions in many places. Waste yards and collection points: mohu.hu/ehulltek. Remember: delete your data before you submit it.

Miért problémás?

Heavy metals (lead, mercury, cobalt) found in mobile are toxic if not handled properly. The production of new mobile phones is extremely energy-intensive, and more than 50 million tons of e-waste are generated worldwide every year. Only less than 20% of mobiles are recycled. A single mobile can pollute up to 1000 liters of water if it gets into nature.

  • Keep using: if it works, give it to someone else, give it to someone else, give it away or sell it.
  • Exchange for recycling: many operators give discounts for the return of an old mobile.
  • Choose a phone that can be repaired and durable(e.g. Fairphone, Shiftphone).
  • Don't buy a new one unnecessarily— new features rarely save the Earth.
  • Use it again: old mobile → alarm clock, security camera, media player.
